I took this picture a while ago.....
....and it saddened me. I wondered why, bearing in mind all the fabulous things to learn in the modern world a high school's night classes had been hijacked by the computer industry.
Is it because this is what everybody wants to learn or that it's all so hard we need to be trained in it before we can use it?

This sign brings to mind something else that really gets my goat: The countless job ads that say "Word and Excel proficiency a must". That's like saying "Taxi driver wanted, must be proficient at driving Ford or Mercury cars."
ReplyDeleteHow about we teach people to use their ability to reason, and then they can make better use of whatever tool fits the bill? Technologists are giving people fish, but not teaching anyone how to fish because it's easier to make a buck when our users are lost without us.
